Deep Winter, Rising Light

The Witches Whisper - Your seasonal whispers of wellness, wonder & witchcraft.

Opening Energy Forecast

In December, we find ourselves immersed in liminal space, a threshold between ending & beginning, death & rebirth. Solstice energy invites reflection, release & renewal. It’s a time to honour what has passed in the old year & gently set intentions for the light that will grow with each passing day.

As the wheel turns yet again, we arrive at the deep stillness of Winter. The air grows sharper, the nights stretch & the land itself seems to rest, waiting, listening. At the heart of this quiet season sits the Winter Solstice, or Yule, the longest night of the year & the sacred hinge upon which darkness begins its retreat & light slowly returns.

The Magic of Winter and the Solstice

Winter Solstice also marks the festival of Yule, drawing attention to nature’s deepest quiet. Though the nights are longest & temperatures lowest, this Sabbat is rich with hope, resilience & the promise of returning light. Just as seeds sleep beneath the frost, so too do our deepest dreams & intentions find fertile ground in this sheltered time.

In many traditions, this day is celebrated as the rebirth of the sun, the moment when light returns, revealing the truth that even the darkest hour carries within it the seed of dawn.

Below you can download the Yule document from our celebrations, along with a short video captured on the day...

Mini Ritual - Welcoming the Returning Light

Here’s a gentle ritual to bring the magic of the Solstice into your home:

  1. Create a Winter Altar: Choose a quiet space & set down an alter cloth in warm colours, gold, red, forest green or white. Add seasonal greenery like holly, pine, or cedar.

  2. Light the Candles: At sunset on Solstice eve, light a candle (or several). Let each flame represent a quality you want to nurture in the coming year, prosperity, strength, compassion.

  3. Reflection & Release: Close your eyes & breathe. Consider what you are ready to release from the year now ending. Old patterns, fears, or regrets. Write them down if you wish. Then offer them to the candle’s flame (safely), trusting the darkness to carry them away while the returning light carries your intentions forward.

  4. Solstice Sunrise Vigil: If you feel called, keep your candles burning through the night or rise at dawn to greet the returning sun. Witnessing the sunrise on the Solstice is a powerful act of welcome & gratitude.

Seasonal Spellwork & Symbolism

  • Evergreens (holly, ivy, pine) remind us of life enduring through stillness. Use them on your altar or in wreaths to protect & ground your space.

  • Cinnamon & spices warmed in teas or simmer pots bring comfort, focus & intention into your ritual work.

  • Feasting & gathering even intimate & simple honours community & abundance, nourishing both body & soul.

Closing Blessing

Winter’s darkness is not emptiness, it is the fertile soil of becoming. In this season of quiet, may you discover your own hidden flame. May the returning light rekindle your hope, soften your edges & strengthen your heart. As above, so below. As within, so without.

Brightest blessings, Aimee x
